Andre van Wort: Still Chasing the Medal
After finishing 4th in the world and undergoing a partial knee replacement, he’s still pursuing international competition at nearly 60.

At the World Championships in Malaga, Andre van Wort finished 4th in the 100m hurdles.
Now, at nearly 60—and after a partial knee replacement—he’s still chasing what he missed.
A medal.
Andre didn’t grow up in track and field. His athletic background included football, judo, gymnastics, and tennis—but it wasn’t until age 39 that he stepped onto the track and began sprinting.
Not long after, he pushed even further.
Into the decathlon.
The Build
Multi-event training brought variety, challenge, and progression—but also wear and tear.
Knee problems followed him throughout his career, eventually leading to a partial knee replacement in late 2022.
For many athletes, that would be the end.
For Andre, it became the next phase.
Training Now
Today, his training is a mix of CrossFit and track work, shifting with the seasons.
- Winter: more strength and conditioning
- Track season: sprinting, hurdles, and event work
Sessions are shorter now. More focused.
Mobility has become a bigger priority.
“As you get older, you have to listen to your body more… even though I often don’t.” 😅
Then vs Now
The difference isn’t effort—it’s approach.
- More strength training
- Better attention to nutrition
- Increased mobility work
- Smarter session structure
Not to do less—
But to keep going.

The Comeback
His biggest challenge now is returning to form after surgery.
A partial knee replacement just 2.5 years ago changed everything.
But progress is happening.
“At the moment, this is getting better and better.”
What He’s Still Chasing
Andre is currently competing in multi-event competitions, with a focus on:
- 100m sprint
- 200m
- Long jump
- Hurdles
At 59 years old (turning 60 this July), he’s still competing internationally.
He competed at the European Championships in Madeira in the decathlon.
And he’s not done.
Next targets:
- 2027 Indoor European Championships (Berlin – Heptathlon)
- 2027 Outdoor European Championships (Finland)
But one goal stands above the rest:
“My dream is a medal at an international competition.”
Especially in Finland—
“I want to be in top shape for the 100m hurdles.”
Longevity & Mindset
Injuries have been part of the journey.
Many of them.
But his mindset hasn’t changed:
“Keep faith in yourself, and everything will be fine.”
Advice to Others
His message is simple:
- Keep enjoying sport
- Stay consistent
- Keep showing up
Because at the end of it—
“It feels good to stay fit when you are older.”
